*3-1/4 yard fabric for back
1/2 yd. for a 2 1/4" binding
OR
5/8 yd. for a 2 1/2" binding
Further Explanation on fabric needed:
Materials needed for quilt measuring approximately 54" by 67":
For quilt top:
2 1/4 yds. field fabric, which includes surroundings of the books, sashings, and borders.
12 different print fabrics to form "books". You will have 9 stacks of books, and each stack has 9 books in it. (That's right, 81 books!!) I organized my stacks into three colorways; yellow, red and green, but you can mix up your fabrics any way you'd like. This would be a great scrappy quilt! So you have choices here.
Each book will be cut to measure 2 1/2" by 10 1/2". If you have enough scraps, this would be a great place to use them. If you want to organize your quilt like mine, you'll need 1/4 yd. of 12 different fabrics (I used four reds, four yellows, and four greens, and then made three stacks of each color.) Note that there will be fabric left over if you make yours like this.
For quilt back:
3 1/4 yards fabric if using only one fabric with a horizontal seam.
OR
If you want to get creative by piecing your own design on the back, you will need 2 yds. of fabric, plus extra fabric for the pieced design area. You should have some fabric left over from the front to use as well.
